Our Bay Talks seminar series is starting up from January 15th to March 11th, 2016.

Join us for a series of free presentations about estuary, coastal, and marine environments - led by the people who study them. Below is a list of dates and speakers for this year's series of talks. All talks are held on Fridays at the Bay Education Center in Rockport, Texas from 12 p.m to 1 p.m. The Bay Education Center is located at 121 Seabreeze Drive, Rockport, TX.

Egery Flats Volunteer Cleanup - November 21st

Please join the Texas Master Naturalists and the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve for a cleanup day at Egery Flats. Come help us keep this important coastal habitat clean for both wildlife and people.

Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Water jugs will also be provided, but please bring a reusable water bottle. Please wear shoes/boots that can get wet and muddy!! It WILL BE muddy out there.

Aransas Pass Coastal Resilience Workshop - August 17th

On August 17th the City of Aransas Pass will be hosting a workshop called Preparing for Change: Building Resilient Coastal Communities. The workshop will be held at the Aransas Pass Civic Center at 700 W. Wheeler Av., Aransas Pass, TX 78336, from 9am to 4pm. The workshop is geared towards local officials and planners. Participants can earn CFM and AICP credits. The workshop is made possible through a partnership the City of Aransas Pass, The Nature Conservancy, Texas A&M University Galveston, Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the American Planning Association.

An Interview with Jace Tunnell, Director of the Mission-Aransas Reserve

Jace Tunnell, director of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve), gave the July 16 UTMSI Departmental Seminar on “How to create an impactful 2 minute video of your research project”. In his presentation he gave tips on recording footage in the field, walked the audience through the movie editing process, and shared a few of the recent marine science videos he has made. Some of his top suggestions included getting the best quality visual and audio recordings possible, creating the final product out of many short clips, and using social media and other internet

Trash on Our Beaches Started With Us, and It Must End with Us

World Ocean Day was celebrated this week and people across the planet talked about how to keep water bottles, micro-trash and other plastics out of our oceans.

Here in Texas, we can do our part by working toward a future where Texas beaches move beyond their reputation for pollution.

Texas beaches along the Gulf of Mexico are some of the trashiest in the nation. I saw that when I first walked the Mustang Island Gulf beach in the 1970s, and I see that now, nearly 40 years later. To quote a long-ago comic strip panel, “There Oughta be a Law!”
